In my Tolkien classes, I use the Houghton Mifflin trade paperback
editions of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion.
These are not only the best editions of the texts, but they are the
editions that Tolkien himself authorized for American publication.
Any page numbers that I use in my lectures refer to these editions.
If you would like to purchase your own copies, you can use the
    convenient links on this page.
Recommended Textbooks
The Lord of the Rings and
The Hobbit
Boxed Set
(most economical, not to mention most cool)
You may also buy any of these volumes individually.
(These are exactly the same as the ones that come in the boxed set.)
The
Silmarillion
Tolkien’s Legends
of the Elder Days.

This book is
breathtaking, but
be warned: it is not
written as a novel,
but as ancient
legends.  Be
prepared for
something totally
different from the
LOTR.
The Monsters
and the Critics
This is a
collection of
Tolkien’s
published
scholarly essays.
It contains
Tolkien’s “On
Fairy-Stories,”
which I discuss in
my introductory
lecture.
The Children
of Hurin
The first new
release from
Tolkien since
The Silmarillion
in 1977!
This is a
novel-length
version of the
story of Turin
Turambar
.
The Letters
of J.R.R.
Tolkien
Selected letters
written by
Tolkien to his
family, his
publishers, and
his readers.

The Lord of
the Rings
:
Unabridged
Recording on
CD.
Narrated by
Robert Inglis, this
is a
wonderful
reading of the
entire trilogy.  A
permanent fixture
on my iPod
The Hobbit:
Unabridged
Recording on CD
Narrated by
Robert Inglis, and
equally wonderful.
The
Silmarillion
:
Unabridged
Recording on CD
Narrated by Martin
Shaw.  I like Shaw's
reading less than
Inglis's, but this is
still quite good, and
it is the only
reading of the
Silmarillion that I
know of.
The
Annotated
Hobbit

Douglas
Anderson, ed.

A wealth of
information that
offers interesting
illumination of
The Hobbit.
Especially
valuable for the
excerpts from the
1937 First Edition
of the book.
