Silmarillion Seminar Episode #19 is Up!
Silmarillion Seminar #19, “Fingolfin, We Hardly Knew Ye” (Of the Ruin of Beleriand and the Fall of Fingolfin), is now available for download. You can get it on the iTunes feed, as usual, or you can also find it on my The Silmarillion Seminar page!

I am sure this episode is as great as the rest……Sadly I am a new person to the casts, and although I have listened to 10-17 already, I decided a week or so ago to start from the beginning with episode 1. I have been reading the chapters before listening to the relevant episode and was ready to download episode 6 tonight when I see you have a new web site. I have not been able to find any archives for the older episodes on the new site. Are you (please, please, please) going to add the older pod casts to the site soon?
All episodes are actually already posted to the site. If you look under Lectures > Courses you’ll find the Silmarillion Seminar (or you can jump right there with this link) which will take you through all of the episodes up to #19. Let us know if you have any trouble with this!
I had a feeling I was just not looking in the correct place. Thanks for the reply!
Thank you all so very much. This podcast is spot on, buttoned up, and humorous to boot. Keep up the great work.
Is the idea to post these lectures in so slow a sequence as to simulate the unfolding of events in the First Age? Seriously, I warn anyone new to the podcasts to ration them carefully. There are currently 19 — If you listen to one every 2 weeks there is a vanishingly small hope that #20 will be posted by the time you finish. This wouldn’t be so frustrating if a) they weren’t totally awesome, and b) the delays weren’t totally gratuitous. These recordings were made many months ago. There is no (apparent) fancy editing or even rudimentary normalizing or compressing of the files. The only “postproduction” seems to be a quick intro and outro slapped on. Why in Mandos does it take so long?!?!?!!?!?
Colin – thanks for your love of the lectures! And we do apologize that the content has not been posted quickly in the past. Two rebuttal points:
Thanks for your devotion and patience!
I know, I know! The recordings are amazing, and free, and I should feel grateful to have be tossed any of these lembas crumbs. But the desire they have awakened for more is unquenchable. They are precious to me. So, you are welcome as far as devotion. You’ve got that, to be sure. Patience? Not so much!
Hi Collin,
Thanks for you patience. I participated in them all and can hardly remember them. (that means it will all sound new to me again. lol).
In fairness to our volunteer editor, there is more to preparing them than “slapping an intro” on them. Usually the sessions were at least two hours long so the extraneous stuff has to be edited out. Plus the fact the editor works full time and has a family. I’m sure editing these can be difficult to prioritize. Having done just the into on a couple of them, i know i’m guilty of delaying the process by not getting my recordings done on a timely basis.
All I can say is “hang in there”
Cheers
Chris
Love the seminars! I’ve listened to all of them and eagerly awaited #19. One thing I noticed is that I have been able to download the previous 18 to my phone, while the new lecture is streaming only. Is this a new format or is there a problem with the file posted? Thanks!
There should be no difference with the files or the way in which they are accessible, but can you do a quick test for us? Would you mind attempting to access the Riddles in the Dark content which has been uploaded around the same time?

Thanks, Nick. The link you posted gives me the option to download or play online, just as the previous Sil lectured did.
Any idea when the next chapter discussion will be posted?
Is there anyway to participate in the remaining lectures? I’ve enjoyed the first 19 so much!
These are great, but I really wish I had discovered this site in 2015 so I could listen to all the lectures in succession.
Thanks! But you mean you…don’t have the ability to time travel?! Actually, we wish you did as it would certainly make editing them all while also working, taking care of a family, writing books, etc so much easier. Keep checking back for more of our free content, though – we hope to have many more published soon.
