Rare J.R.R. Tolkien Interview Found
The BBC archives have just released something truly remarkable for any fans of Tolkien: a rare video interview from 1968! In the clip from In Their Own Words, J.R.R. Tolkien talks about everything from nature to his love of beer – and, of course, his books. A treat to start off your Monday, we hope!
Watch part two and read more over at The Good Report.
(Thanks to Patricia Ralston for posting this over at Mythgard’s Facebook page.)

Obviously can’t be just released because the videos were uploaded in 2010.
We apologize if this dampens your excitement for what we felt was a pretty cool find on the web.
Oh I don’t know, it remains a good find regardless of whether or not it is “new”. I find that it reinforces some of what Prof. Olsen and others have said about Tolkien being barely understandable in his speech. I got a kick out of his mumblings. I enjoyed the insight into what he thought of trees–as if it weren’t already apparent from the books.
I saw this back when it was originally posted, and some of the interview has been used in other documentaries, so it was a little disappointing that it wasn’t really “new”. But it was nice to see it again anyway.
There is also a link to another source of the video (not cut into two) at Dave’s other podcast site, The Secrets of The Hobbit (http://thehobbit.sqpn.com/) from April 12.
I always get a kick out of the Monty Pythonish detractors. “I, of course, have never read Tolkien!”
Looking at the post on “The Good Report”, they used the text under the youtube video as their article text and the source of their title. So the confusion is easy to understand as the video WAS new when the original text was written. They should have researched a little better.
Old or New (or is that more accurately Old AND New) it may for a very interesting watch.
Thanks for sharing it
